3/17-18/07 WERA/AMA National @ Roebling Road Raceway, GA
By: Tony Pavilonis #554
This was my first WERA / AMA National event. I saw some old friends , and had the pleasure of making a few new ones.
Good crowd this weekend for sure, wish Mike could have been there with us.
Saturday
It started off chilly and windy , gusts of 25mph.
One 30 minute practice session per group instead of the usual 10-15 minutes of practice was scheduled so I planned on coming in early since I was on old tires. Instead, I stayed out the entire 30 minutes and got 17 consecutive laps in with a best time of 1:19 and change. I felt good , the bike felt good.
I come in from practice and put the bike up on the stands and notice fork oil all over my lower right fairing and brake caliper.......... not good! Blown fork seals!
I quickly tore my bike apart , taking my forks off as well as both wheels. The forks go to Jon at CTR Suspension for a rebuild and since I am on Team Bridgestone, my wheels go to Stickboy at the Bridgestone Semi for new rubber.
Jon rebuilt my forks in just over an hour ( sweet!) and Stickboy changed my tires while I waited there and talked with him about dancing midgets. So within a few hours of me tearing my bike apart , I had my rebuilt forks back on my bike as well as fresh rubber. My bike was ready for Sundays races. Life is good.
Sunday: Chilly in the morning , in the 30's. Light wind which was great compared to 25 mph gusts.
I skipped 1st practice and went out for 2nd practice instead. Did about 6 laps and had a best time of 1:20 which was not going to cut it in the races but it was ok for cold practice.
I worked my ass off and fought for every position I gained from last place. They aren't the best finishes I have had, but that was some of the best racing I have done so far.
Race 1: 600 Superstock
10 Laps
Started on Row 12, position 20 out of 26
Worked my way up from 20th to finish 9th
Best lap time of 1:18
Race 2: 750 Superstock
10 Laps
Started on Row 7 , position 17 out of 17
Worked my way up from 17th to finish 7th.
Best lap time of 1:18 again
